Stromboli: tra vulcano, mare e cibo

 Stromboli, ’isola situata più a nord dell’intero arcipelago delle Eolie, è il faro del Mar Tirreno. Un vulcano attivo affascinante e a tratti pericoloso, è soprannominato “IDDU”, che in italiano significa “Lui” il Vulcano!

Come arrivare a Stromboli

Stromboli é raggiungibile da Napoli, Lipari, Milazzo e Messina con un traghetto e nella stagione estiva anche in aliscafo non solo dalle località già citate ma anche da Reggio Calabria, Vibo Valentia e Tropea.

Gli Strombolani lo venerano alla stregua di una divinità che li protegge  in caso di caduta di materiale piroclastico. Tuttavia non si fanno intimorire dalle eruzioni e praticano tranquillamente le loro attività, così come fanno i catanesi che vivono alle falde dell’Etna!

A Stromboli si vive davvero a contatto con la natura, tra il verde intenso e la quasi totale assenza di strade, la rende sicuramente una delle isole più selvagge.

L’isola è composta dai villaggi di San Vincenzo e San Bartolo che formano nell’area nord est dell’Isola, il paese di Stromboli. La vita della popolazione si svolge nei villaggi, a San Vincenzo c’è una scuola elementare e media, ma dopo tali scuole solitamente i ragazzi vanno a Lipari dove sono presenti scuole secondarie di secondo grado.

Il più piccolo porto del mondo: Ginostra

Sulla costa meridionale sorge invece un villaggio isolato raggiungibile solo via mare, Ginostra, con il suo porticciolo, il più piccolo al mondo e  con una massiccia presenza della ginestra endemica, (Genista tyrrbena), da cui prende probabilmente il nome. Qui si raggiunge circa quota 850 m, villaggio dal fascino prettamente eoliano, vede il solo mezzo di  trasporto nell’asino ed il richiamo di quel mare blu profondo, su cui si affacciano le case tinteggiate di bianco calce, che lasciano nella  nostra immagine un ricordo di quiete, la stessa che in inverno conta appena 30 residenti.

Lo Strombolicchio, nel 1991 “RISERVA NATURALE INTEGRATA” dalla superficie di appena 300 mq, completamente disabitato e caratterizzato dalla sola presenza di un faro,  automatizzato ed alimentato ad energia solare sarà il punto di riferimento e di compagnia durante le vostre vacanze, ogni scatto fotografico, sarà una cartolina differente per una collezion alternata da colori ed emozioni. Imperdibile un giro in barca per apprezzarne tutta la sua magnificenza, che farà comprendere meglio che ciò che vedete è solo la punta, infatti le sue pareti di circa 50 metri fino ad un fondale sabbioso, ospitano alghe incrostanti, spugne, anellidi marini, briozoi e gorgonie.  Strombolicchio ospita la  “lucertola delle Eolie”, la “podarcis raffonei”,  elemento di notevole importanza  dell’arcipelago eoliano poiché costituisce l’unico endemismo micro insulare esclusivamente italiano e simbolo delle isole.

La spiaggia Grotta di Eolo ed il mito greco

Per gli amanti dello snorkeling, del mare e di fotografie all’alba, questo è il luogo ideale, tra la sabbia nera ed al sorgere del sole, in questa minuscola spiaggia si possono ammirare degli splendidi giochi di luce grazie ai raggi che fanno capolino alle spalle dello Strombolicchio! Secondo la mitologia greca, Eolo, Dio dei venti, abitava nelle isole Eolie e teneva i venti chiusi proprio nella grotta che fa da cornice alla spiaggia.

I Trekkers  a caccia di vulcani, non possono mancare all’appuntamento dell’ascesa al cratere, con la visione delle eruzioni che è particolarmente suggestiva al crepuscolo: dal porto di Stromboli inizia la passeggiata attraverso il centro abitato, fino alla collina dove si trova la Chiesa di San Vincenzo con la sua terrazza panoramica. Da qui il sentiero conduce all’Osservatorio, da dove si può ammirare la famosa Sciara del fuoco, dove l’acqua ed il fuoco cingono il loro incontro d’amore,  a 400mt slm. Da un paio d’anni, le nostre guide autorizzate continuano  ad accompagnare i turisti in piena sicurezza, per far sì che l’esperienza  sia sempre un’avventura in piena serenità, regalando un incomparabile spettacolo: la natura domina ed è la protagonista assoluta!

Ritornando verso il porto si attraversano i piccoli borghi di Ficogrande e  Piscità.

 Ma altrettanto suggestiva sarà l’escursione in notturna in barca per ammirare il ruggito del vulcano con il suo spettacolo attraverso eruzioni vulcaniche che con una regolarità incredibile stagliano i lapilli rosso fuoco, che con i suoi bagliori contro il nero del cielo danno vita a magnifici fuochi d’ artificio naturali!

 Stromboli tra Comus e Bacco

Come tutte le isole, anche Stromboli ha la sua tradizione culinaria: maccheroni al sugo di cernia, spaghetti al sugo di gamberi o al nero di seppia, zuppe di pesce immancabili   totani ripieni, spiedini di calamari ed involtini di pesce spada, rappresentano il must insieme all’insalata di capperi, la caponata di melanzane e le frittelle di cavolfiore. E Dulcis in fundo le golose e fresche granite, personalmente adoro quella di fichi di stagione, consigliata ovviamente a tutti i nostri clienti viaggiatori!!

Il Cinema e la notorietà

Nel 1949 Roberto Rossellini gira “Stromboli Terra di Dio” che valse  un NASTRO D’ARGENTO A INGRID BERGMAN (1951) e quindi la immediata notorietà alle Isole Eolie finite sugli schermi cinematografici di tutto il Mondo, favorendo l’avvento del Turismo che è oggi il motore principale dell’economia Eoliana.

Proprio Stromboli fu “galeotto”   per l’amore che esplose da Rossellini e Bergman, scandalo che riempì le pagine dei rotocalchi dell’epoca. Rossellini, infatti, all’epoca condivideva la sua vita con Anna Magnani, che lasciò improvvisamente per l’attrice svedese, alla quale affidò la parte che in un primo momento era stata pensata proprio per l’ex compagna. La casa rossa, ospita le foto sul set che coinvolse la comunità locale, si ammirano all’Associazione Ingrid Bergman, gestita da Michele Giardulli e Gianluca Di Natale, che ha lì sede, dove dimorò l’attrice svedese. Bellissime anche le foto raccolte nel raffinato volume, pubblicato, Stromboli 1949.

Oggi purtroppo all’asta il nido dei due amanti di 220 mq in centro, a tutt’oggi testimonianza della “Dolce vita”.

Una curiosità: Jules Verne ha ambientato a Stromboli la fine del suo “Viaggio al centro della Terra”.

Ecosostenibilità- energia ed acqua

L’isola la si può visitare a piedi, in Mountain-bike o noleggiando uno scooter, perché il sapore della vacanza possa mantenere inalterate tutte le aspettative, solo i locali girano in Ape car a tre ruote … uno scatto retrò …

Le case bianche che punteggiano l‘isola,  sono caratterizzate da strutture a km 0 con u bagghiu, una terrazza eolica, coperta dal pergolato di cannizzi su travi in legno, che poggiano su  cilindrici pilastri e distinti da  bisoli, panchine in muratura tra le colonne per riposarsi.

Le passeggiate più emozionanti restano certamente quelle illuminate dalla luna piena, poiché le strade a Stromboli sono tutte senza la luce elettrica ed illuminate delle luci delle casette  e dalle torce che i viandanti portano con sé, affascinando di un alone misterioso ogni incontro

Inoltre l’isola di Stromboli, priva di una fonte di acqua dolce, la si raccoglie, nel periodo delle piogge, in dei pozzi appositamente costruiti, mentre delle navi cisterna provvedono al trasporto, dal porto di Milazzo, essendo il desalinizzatore insufficiente per i bisogni della popolazione soprattutto nel periodo turistico.

Il rapporto di Legambiente comunicava prima della pandemia che segnali di cambiamento anche da Stromboli erano già in moto, grazie  all’impianto fotovoltaico del borgo di Ginostra, da 100 kW, è collegato ad una mini-rete di trasmissione in bassa tensione interamente interrata, lunga 5 km. Grazie a questo sistema decentralizzato, che serve 140 utenze, il generatore diesel viene acceso soltanto a seguito di prolungati periodi di assenza di soleggiamento (e nei periodi di maggiore affluenza turistica).

Non si può lasciare l’isola senza aver fatto almeno un tour tra le botteghe di souvenir e metter in valigia qualche  pareo, pietre decorate, pomici, monili in pietra lavica…

Le Pietre di Stromboli, opera di Salvatore Russo, quotato scultore autodidatta, con mazzuola e scalpello, spugne abrasive e flessibili dai dischi diamantati ricava  premiati volti primitivi ed enigmatici dalle grandi pietre laviche raccolte in spiaggia, segno della forza della pietra vulcanica che sull’isola racconta la vita degli Strombolani.

Il profumo del gelsomino notturno, i colori delle albe e dei tramonti insieme alle strade illuminate dalle stelle ed il silenzio a volte interrotto dal fiato del vulcano con le sue esplosioni ed una Malvasia ai piedi di “Iddu” durante le sue magnifiche esplosioni serali, quasi come lo schermo di un proiettore, saranno precisamente i souvenir più belli da metter nel trolley alla vostra partenza insieme ad un gran desiderio di farvi ritorno.

How to get to Stromboli

Stromboli can be reached from Naples, Lipari, Milazzo and Messina by ferry and in the summer season also by hydrofoil not only from the places already mentioned but also from Reggio Calabria, Vibo Valentia and Tropea.

"The Strombolani" , the inhabitants of the island of Stromboli, venerate it as a deity who protects them in case of falling pyroclastic material. However they are not intimidated by the eruptions and they quietly go about their activities, just like the people of Catania who live on the slopes of Etna!

In Stromboli you really live in contact with nature, between the intense green and the almost total absence of roads, makes it certainly one of the wildest islands.

The island is composed by the villages of San Vincenzo and San Bartolo that form in the north east area of the island, the town of Stromboli. The life of the population takes place in the villages, in San Vincenzo there is an elementary and middle school, but after these schools usually the boys go to Lipari where there are secondary schools of second degree.

The smallest port in the world: Ginostra

On the southern coast rises instead an isolated village reachable only by sea, Ginostra, with its small port, the smallest in the world and with a massive presence of the endemic broom, (Genista tyrrbena), from which it probably takes its name. Here you reach about 850 m altitude, village from the purely Aeolian charm, sees the only means of transport in the donkey and the call of that deep blue sea, overlooked by houses painted white lime, which leave in our image a memory of quiet, the same that in winter has just 30 residents.

The Strombolicchio, in 1991 "INTEGRATED NATURAL RESERVE" from the surface of just 300 square meters, completely uninhabited and characterized by the sole presence of a lighthouse, automated and powered by solar energy will be the reference point and company during your vacations, each photo shoot will be a different postcard for a collection alternating colors and emotions. According to Greek mythology, Aeolus, God of the winds, lived in the Aeolian Islands and kept the winds closed right in the cave that frames the beach.

Trekkers hunting for volcanoes, can not miss the appointment of the ascent to the crater, with the vision of the eruptions that is particularly suggestive at dusk: from the port of Stromboli begins the walk through the town, to the hill where the Church of San Vincenzo is located with its panoramic terrace. From here the path leads to the Observatory, from where you can admire the famous Sciara del fuoco, where the water and the fire encircle their love meeting, at 400mt above sea level. Like all the islands, Stromboli has its own culinary tradition: macaroni with grouper sauce, spaghetti with shrimp sauce or squid ink, fish soups, unfailing stuffed squid, squid skewers and swordfish rolls are a must together with caper salad, eggplant caponata and cauliflower fritters. And Dulcis in fundo the delicious and fresh granite, I personally love the seasonal figs, obviously recommended to all our customers travelers!

Cinema and notoriety

In 1949 Roberto Rossellini shoots "Stromboli Land of God" which earned a SILVER TAPE INGRID BERGMAN (1951) and then the immediate notoriety of the Aeolian Islands ended up on movie screens around the world, favoring the advent of tourism that is now the main engine of the Aeolian economy.

Just Stromboli was "galeotto" for the love that exploded from Rossellini and Bergman, a scandal that filled the pages of the magazines of the time. Sustainability - energy and water

The island can be visited on foot, by mountain-bike or renting a scooter, because the flavor of the vacation can keep all expectations unchanged, only the locals go around in Ape car with three wheels ... a retro shot ...

The white houses that dot the island, are characterized by 0 km structures with u bagghiu, a wind terrace, covered by the pergola of cannizzi on wooden beams, which rest on cylindrical pillars and distinguished by bisoli, masonry benches between the columns to rest.

The most exciting walks are certainly those illuminated by the full moon, since the streets of Stromboli are all without electric light and illuminated by the lights of the houses and the flashlights that travelers bring with them, fascinating a mysterious halo every encounter.

In addition, the island of Stromboli, without a source of fresh water, it is collected, during the rainy season, in the wells specially built, while the tankers provide transport, from the port of Milazzo, being the desalination insufficient for the needs of the population especially during the tourist period.

The report of Legambiente communicated before the pandemic that signals of change also from Stromboli were already in motion, thanks to the photovoltaic system of the village of Ginostra, of 100 kW, is connected to a low voltage transmission mini-network entirely underground, 5 km long. Thanks to this decentralized system, which serves 140 utilities, the diesel generator is turned on only after prolonged periods of no sunshine (and during periods of higher tourist numbers).

Ustica, isola incontaminata, raggiungibile in aliscafo da Palermo, dalla Sicilia, ma collegata anche da Napoli, si apre ai nostri occhi, allo sbarco dell’aliscafo, come un paradiso, in qualsiasi stagione la si visiti, meta ideale per gli amanti della natura e del mare, diventa la vacanza perfetta anche per le famiglie e per una settimana di puro relax o un weekend romantico.

Prima Area Marina Protetta istituita in Italia, Ustica offre al turista unicità tra flora e fauna meravigliose, davvero uniche nel Mediterraneo e paradiso per le immersioni e lo snorkeling guidati. L‘agricoltura è sempre considerata la principale fonte di sostentamento: Le lenticchie di Ustica, Presidio Slow Food, sono diventate nell’ultimo decennio il fiore all’occhiello dei prodotti agricoli tradizionali ed importante è anche la melanzana di Ustica, alla quale è stato dedicato un evento, con il premio annuale al miglior ristoratore.

“Dal punto di vista turistico, si può scoprire la storia di Ustica godendo delle sue antiche meraviglie archeologiche: si può scegliere di visitare insediamenti umani preistorici, oppure ci si può avventurare per antichi sentieri e per la strada dell’antico paesino provando l’emozione unica di cavalcare un cavallo o un asino.”

La Natura ed il mare sono i protagonisti di questa terra ancora vergine: il verde richiama gli amanti del trekking, attraverso visite guidate da guide innamorate del loro lavoro e della loro terra, che vi mostreranno sentieri tra meraviglie archeologiche e geologiche, da dove ammirare un incantevole panorama, grandi macchie di essenze mediterranee, come un percorso antico, che certamente veniva utilizzato dai carbonari che, prima del popolamento dell’isola, vi giungevano saltuariamente per sfruttare le sue risorse naturali.

La strada, ripristinata in epoca borbonica, separava i terreni coltivati dalle terre di uso comune destinate a pascolo. É stata ampliata e acciottolata a metà Novecento onde consentire la salita di mezzi motorizzati al semaforo, vecchia stazione meteorologica ormai sostituita dal moderno radar.

Ustica è anche l’habitat ideale per moltissimi uccelli rari, offrendo quindi la possibilità di effettuare il birdwatching in uno dei luoghi più incontaminati della Sicilia.

Tipicità locali: la piccolissima lenticchia biologica, certificata è utilizzata dai migliori chef italiani, ma esiste anche una tipica produzione enologica isolana, tra cui spicca lo zibibbo da cui si ottiene anche un ottimo passito.

Gustosissimi sono i pomodori di pennula usticesi, base di molteplici pietanze locali destinati anche alle conserve invernali.

Imperdibile il gamberetto di Ustica, chiamato Parapandalo rosa, è di piccole dimensioni e di colorazione rossa. La sua pesca, effettuata con le nasse, è riservata solo ai professionisti locali autorizzati.

In cucina viene usato in diverse ricette (da provare gli spaghetti con gamberetti e pomodorini), ognuna delle quali capace di sprigionare il gusto raffinato del crostaceo, dolce ma deciso, intenso e sapido. Il crostaceo è ottimo anche crudo con una leggerissima marinatura.

Considerando che siamo dei sostenitori dell’apprezzare i piatti tipici in loco, dove aria, acqua e ambiente esaltano i veri sapori di un prodotto autentico, ovunque, nel mondo, Vi consigliamo questo piatto da cucinare prima ad Ustica, poi a casa vostra con i prodotti che potrete reperire e a raccontarci le differenze riscontrate!!!

Spaghetti con gamberetti di Ustica e pomodorini

Ingredienti per 2 persone:

-200 gr di spaghetti

-150 gr di gamberetti sgusciati

-10 pomodorini di pachino

-olio evo

-uno spicchio d’aglio

-sale

-basilico

-prezzemolo    

Versate in una padella dell’olio evo ed uno spicchio d’aglio e lasciate soffriggere per qualche secondo, successivamente aggiungete i pomodorini tagliati a metà e il basilico. Salate e aggiungete i gamberetti sgusciati ai pomodorini. Saltate i gamberetti per un minuto ed aggiungete il trito di prezzemolo. Cucinate gli spaghetti e non appena mancheranno 3 minuti alla fine della cottura uniteli ai gamberetti. Mantecate gli spaghetti aggiungendo dell’acqua di cottura.  A cottura ultimata, togliete dal fuoco e servite il piatto caldo. Buon Appetito!!!

Ma Ustica, è ecosostenibile anche nel visitarla, infatti consigliamo il noleggio di una E-bike, con pedalata assistita, quindi, per potervela assaporare in tutta serenità e avendo cura della natura, la stessa che vi aspetta per accogliervi in tutta la sua magnificenza!

The road, restored in the Bourbon period, separated the cultivated land from the common land used for grazing. It was widened and cobbled in the mid-twentieth century in order to allow the ascent of motorized vehicles to the traffic light, old weather station now replaced by modern radar.

Ustica is also the ideal habitat for many rare birds, thus offering the possibility of birdwatching in one of the most uncontaminated places in Sicily.

Local typicalities: the very small biological lentil, certified, is used by the best Italian chefs, but there is also a typical wine production of the island, among which the Zibibbo from which an excellent passito is also obtained.

Very tasty are the tomatoes of Ustica, base of many local dishes also used for winter preserves.

Not to be missed is the shrimp of Ustica, called Parapandalo rosa, it is small in size and red in color. Its fishing, carried out with creels, is reserved only to authorized local professionals.

In cooking it is used in many recipes (try spaghetti with shrimps and cherry tomatoes), each of them capable of releasing the refined taste of the crustacean, sweet but strong, intense and sapid. The crustacean is also excellent raw with a very light marinade.

Considering that we are supporters of the appreciation of typical dishes in place, where air, water and environment enhance the true flavors of an authentic product, anywhere in the world, we recommend this dish to cook first in Ustica, then at home with the products you can find and tell us the differences found!!!

Spaghetti with Ustica shrimps and cherry tomatoes

Ingredients for 2 people:

-200 gr of spaghetti

-150 gr of shelled shrimps

-10 cherry tomatoes

-evo oil

-one garlic clove

-salt

-basil

-parsley         

Pour some evo oil and a clove of garlic into a frying pan and sauté for a few seconds, then add the halved cherry tomatoes and basil. Season with salt and add the shelled shrimps to the cherry tomatoes. Saute the shrimp for a minute and add the chopped parsley. Cook the spaghetti and as soon as it is 3 minutes from the end of cooking add it to the shrimp. Stir the spaghetti and add some cooking water.  When cooked, remove from heat and serve hot. Enjoy!!!

San Gregorio di Capo d'Orlando di Paola F. J. Torrisi

S. Gregorio di Capo d’Orlando, borgo di pescatori del comune di Capo d’Orlando, in provincia di Messina, incastonato tra i monti Nebrodi e le Isole Eolie, che fanno da cornice ad una cartolina incantata, racconta le antiche tradizioni di un tipico borgo siciliano dedito soprattutto alla pesca. L’area della frazione orlandina, con un fondale polimorfo, limpido e cristallino è caratterizzato dalle tipiche semplici e belle casette di pescatori, soggetto di attenzione da parte di artisti e pittori.

La pesca più nota è quella dei “pettini”, pescati soprattutto nel mese di agosto, quando sono più famelici e meno accorti, per una pesca sostenibile, dove gli esemplari più grossi si trovano tra 5 e 10 mt di profondità e vicino alla costa, li si pesca con il noto tipico e semplice metodo dalla barca a bolentino.

Il mare su cui fondo misterioso si dice sia sommersa la città di Agatirso, non è certo l’unica attrazione del paese, a pochi km dal borgo, una visita imperdibile è Villa Piccolo di Calanovella, una raffinata ed elegante villa, fine ‘800 che conserva i ricordi artistici ed umani di questa nobile famiglia palermitana, stabilitasi a Capo d’Orlando sul finire degli anni ’30. La particolare amicizia, oltre che parentela, che legava Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, autore de “Il Gattopardo” con i Piccolo (Lucio, cavaliere e poeta riconosciuto prima della sua morte nel 1969 poeta di statura europea, Agata Giovanna, appassionata e studiosa di botanica, Casimiro, il barone, pittore, fotografo e spiritista) portò il “principe” gattopardesco a soggiornare spesso a Capo d’Orlando e qui, a Villa Piccolo, scrisse buona parte del suo capolavoro.

Le Terme romane di Bagnoli, nella zona terminale di San Gregorio è un complesso termale del II sec d. C. dove sorge anche una villa comunale realizzata sulla spiaggia, con alcune piante caratteristiche, tra cui Tamerici, Oleandri, Le palme dell’Arizona e spettacolari durante il periodo della fioritura così come i filari di Tiglio.

 San Gregorio è nota soprattutto perché nel 1962 un amante del mare, presenza insostituibile per il cantautore genovese, Gino Paoli, porta alla luce la spiaggia, grazie al suo brano “Sapore di sale”, ispirazione per una bellissima ed indimenticata canzone durante una vacanza in Sicilia.

Per gli amanti dell’ecosostenibilità e della natura proprio alle spalle di San Gregorio, si trova un sentiero in una lussureggiante vegetazione, una Macchia Mediterranea, che si snoda lungo un viottolo percorribile solamente a piedi e per i più esperti in bici tipo mountain-bike, che collega piazza Tullio Trifilò con la piazzetta di San Gregorio lungo una mulattiera lunga circa km 1,200 e larga m.1.

Questa, un tempo era l’unica via di collegamento tra la città e il borgo San Gregorio, che tutt’oggi è caratterizzata da panorami suggestivi, dove l’unico suono che vi accompagnerà sarà quello di un lieve sciabordio delle onde del mare ed il panorama delle Isole Eolie, a nord-est fa capolino la torre di Brolo e Capo Milazzo. Giunti sulla galleria di San Gregorio ci si trova sul Ballatoio dei Conigli, così chiamato perché al crepuscolo li si vede in gruppo alla ricerca di cibo. Di giorno la scoperta di tante spiagge lungo la costa di circa 8 km che giunge sino a Capo d’Orlando, o la possibilità di visitare anche in giornata le magnifiche Isole Eolie, sono alcuni dei suggerimenti per una vacanza piena di esperienze.

Potreste anche scegliere il periodo della Sagra del pesce azzurro, dove centinaia di chilogrammi di pesce appena pescato e cucinato al momento offerti a turisti e residenti, in una serata ricca di allegria e spensieratezza.

                             

Scopo della “sagra” far conoscere, soprattutto ai turisti, le qualità organolettiche ed i valori nutrizionali del pesce azzurro.

Per il viaggiatore esigente il borgo diventa motivo di vacanza relax e attiva, grazie al trekking, biking,  allo snorkeling ed al nuoto, ma anche movida la sera tra lidi, bar e cocktail e discoteche, o anche solo un ottima scelta tra i gustosissimi gelati locali e tipicità montanare e marittime, a caccia dei tramonti più magici e di lune piene da riempire lo spirito e regalarvi una coinvolgente carica di energia! 

S. Gregorio di Capo d'Orlando, fishing village in the municipality of Capo d'Orlando, in the province of Messina, nestled between the Nebrodi mountains and the Aeolian Islands, which frame an enchanted postcard, tells the ancient traditions of a typical Sicilian village dedicated mainly to fishing.The area of the village of Orlandina, with a polymorphous, clear and crystalline backdrop is characterized by the typical simple and beautiful fishermen's houses, subject of attention from artists and painters.

The most famous fishing is that of the "scallops", fished especially in the month of August, when they are more ravenous and less careful, for a sustainable fishing, where the largest specimens are found between 5 and 10 meters deep and near the coast, they are fished with the known typical and simple method from the boat to bolentino.

The sea on whose mysterious bottom is said to be submerged the city of Agatirso, is certainly not the only attraction of the country, a few kilometers from the village, an unmissable visit is Villa Piccolo di Calanovella, a refined and elegant villa, end of '800 that preserves the artistic and human memories of this noble family from Palermo, settled in Capo d'Orlando in the late '30s. The particular friendship, as well as kinship, that tied Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, author of "Il Gattopardo" with the Piccolo family (Lucio, knight and poet recognized before his death in 1969 as a poet of European stature, Agata Giovanna, passionate and scholar of botany, Casimiro, the baron, painter, photographer and spiritualist) led the "prince" gattopardesco to stay often in Capo d'Orlando and here, at Villa Piccolo, wrote much of his masterpiece.

The Roman Baths of Bagnoli, in the terminal area of San Gregorio is a thermal complex of the II century A.D. where there is also a municipal villa built on the beach, with some characteristic plants, including Tamerici, Oleandri, Arizona palms and spectacular during the period of flowering as well as the rows of Tiglio.

 San Gregorio is best known because in 1962 a lover of the sea, an irreplaceable presence for the Genoese singer-songwriter, Gino Paoli, brought to light the beach, thanks to his song "Sapore di sale", inspiration for a beautiful and unforgettable song during a vacation in Sicily.

For lovers of eco-sustainability and nature just behind San Gregorio, there is a path in a lush vegetation, a Macchia Mediterranea, which winds along a lane passable only on foot and for the most experienced mountain-bike type, which connects Piazza Tullio Trifilò with the square of San Gregorio along a mule track about 1.200 km long and 1 m wide.

This was once the only way to connect the city and the village of San Gregorio, which is still characterized by striking views, where the only sound that will accompany you will be that of a slight lapping of the waves of the sea and the panorama of the Aeolian Islands, to the north-east peeps out the tower of Brolo and Capo Milazzo. Once on the gallery of San Gregorio you are on the Ballatoio dei Conigli, so called because at dusk you can see them in groups looking for food.During the day the discovery of many beaches along the coast of about 8 km that reaches up to Capo d'Orlando, or the possibility to visit even in a day the magnificent Aeolian Islands, are some of the suggestions for a vacation full of experiences.

San Giovanni Li Cuti (Catania)

 

Borgo marinaro della città di Catania, nascosto al tran-tran della vita cittadina quotidiana, caratteristico per le sue rocce laviche e per la sabbia nera vulcanica, appare come una deliziosa sorpresa agli occhi del viaggiatore che si ritrova improvvisamente in un luogo d’altri tempi, dove per certi aspetti il tempo sembra  essersi fermato.

Le rocce provenienti da antiche colate del 1169, del 1329 e del 1381 costituiscono  il più, ma parte sembra sia stato utilizzato dagli scavi della ferrovia Catania- Messina del 1956.

Alle spalle di San Giovanni Li Cuti,  Viale Ruggero di Laurìa,  Viale Artale Alagona, Piazza Europa, Piazza del Tricolore, Piazza Nettuno, Piazza Ognina e Piazza Mancini Battaglia, caratterizzano il lungomare della scogliera catanese, da poco restituito le domeniche alla cittadinanza, grazie al divieto di passaggio delle automobili per una migliore fruibilità attenta all’ambiente.

Il lungomare, da qualche anno, ha trovato anche la sua dimensione ecosostenibile, grazie alle piste ciclabili e alle piste pedonali che permettono ai catanesi di godere di paesaggi e colori unici ed intensi sia all’alba che al tramonto, mentre durante l’attività  fisica cercano di cacciar via lo stress della giornata lavorativa.

Il borgo deve il suo nome alla vicina chiesetta dedicata a San Giovanni Battista che oggi non esiste più, gli abitanti locali continuano a farsi chiamare orgogliosamente “licutiani”, dove, per l’appunto I Cuti Lisci, in dialetto catanese, sono gli scogli levigati.

Il piccolo porticciolo,  un semplice ma caratteristico approdo con ingresso da sud-est per le piccole barche da pesca, è caratterizzato da case basse, colori accesi, in contrasto con il nero della pietra lavica, piccoli portoncini e balconi in ferro battuto lavorato, decorati con piante grasse e fiori per tutte le stagioni ed  è la prima immagine che cattura lo sguardo attento di chi ha ancora l’immagine caotica della città che rimane alle spalle.

San Giovanni Li Cuti è il quartiere marinaro dove rilassarsi, dove ammirare ancora i pescatori che rammendano le reti bucate per ore… il tempo sembra essersi fermato, osservandoli!

La sera e soprattutto d’estate la “movida catanese” ne fa luogo di culto, grazie ai locali ed ai ristoranti che offrono pietanze tipiche e stagionali… i profumi degli spaghetti ai ricci di mare insieme ad un calice di  vino bianco  DOP dell’Etna, con una vista mare, diventano uno dei tanti ricordi di questa magica esperienza!
Di giorno la battigia diventa una cartolina da fotografare insieme al proprio partner o agli amici: la spiaggia si ravviva e regala un’abbronzatura d’eccellenza! 

Per gli amanti della Street-art  il muretto d’ingresso del piccolo borgo è diventato la tela dell’artista Salvo Ligama che ha dato ulteriore carattere alla spiaggetta adornando una parete con un mezzo busto in torsione del Dio Nettuno,  ispirato all’ austero all’opera letteraria “Neptune” di Antoine Coysevox.
Per il viaggiatore che sceglie di visitare Catania il borgo marinaro di San Giovanni Li Cuti è una tappa imperdibile per un pieno di emozioni colorate per la propria anima!

Seafaring village of the city of Catania, hidden to the tran- tran of the daily city life, characteristic for its lava rocks and for the black volcanic sand, it appears as a delicious surprise to the eyes of the traveller who finds himself suddenly in a place of other times, where for certain aspects the time seems to have stopped.
The rocks from ancient flows of 1169, 1329 and 1381 constitute the most, but part seems to have been used by the excavations of the Catania-Messina railway in 1956.
Behind San Giovanni Li Cuti, Viale Ruggero di Laurìa, Viale Artale Alagona, Piazza Europa, Piazza del Tricolore, Piazza Nettuno, Piazza Ognina and Piazza Mancini Battaglia, characterize the promenade of the cliff of Catania, recently returned Sundays to citizenship, thanks to the prohibition of passage of cars for a better usability environmentally friendly.

The small harbor, a simple but characteristic landing place with entrance from the south-east for small fishing boats, is characterized by low houses, bright colors, in contrast with the black of the lava stone, small doors and balconies in wrought iron worked, decorated with succulent plants and flowers for all seasons and is the first image that catches the eye of those who still have the chaotic image of the city behind.

San Giovanni Li Cuti is the seafaring district where you can relax, where you can still admire the fishermen who mend the nets with holes for hours ... time seems to stand still, watching them!

In the evening and especially in summer the "movida catanese" makes it a place of worship, thanks to the local restaurants that offer typical and seasonal dishes ... the scents of spaghetti with sea urchins along with a glass of white wine DOP Etna, with a sea view, become one of the many memories of this magical experience!

During the day, the shoreline becomes a postcard to be photographed with your partner or friends: the beach comes alive and gives you a great tan!
For lovers of street-art the entrance wall of the small village has become the canvas of the artist Salvo Ligama who has given additional character to the beach adorning a wall with a half bust in twist of the God Neptune, inspired by the 'austere literary work "Neptune" by Antoine Coysevox.
