Fiumefreddo di Sicilia between nobility, legends and natural reserve

Country of noble origins, at the center of an important citrus area, sees its notoriety linked mainly to the summer period and its beaches, but certainly worthy of note, for what most characterizes it, although little known to most.

Palazzo Corvaja, an elegant residence of the eighteenth century, in the district Diana, once part of the barony of Calatabiano, is an example of villa - farm built by the nobles of the time for the holiday and for the control of landed estates and production facilities. Evocative is the use of lava stone for the exhibitions of doors, balconies and windows, the embattled scalar bodies and the coloring of the facings with strong colors. On the north side of the courtyard with the facade facing the street is located the Church of San Vincenzo, which served both as a church for the local population and as a private chapel of the family. Leaning against the building there is the millstone, built in 1694 by the family Bottari.

Oriented Nature Reserve is a protected natural area located in the municipalities of Calatabiano and Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, near the mouth of the river Fiumefreddo, created in order to allow the "conservation of aquatic flora and the restoration, along the banks of the river, the Mediterranean flora. Place of enchanting natural charm with beaches, eucalyptus groves and pine forest..

Torrerossa di Fiumefreddo: pride of the artistic and cultural heritage of Fiumefreddo di Sicilia is the Red Tower, symbol of the city, which takes its name from the color of the terracotta bricks used for the walls.  Thanks also to the requalification it is considered today as a real archaeological site. There are no significant documents, with the exception of the testimony of Jean-Pierre Louis Laurent Houël, painter of the eighteenth century that during his trip to Sicily, visiting the funerary building noted: "This tomb seems to have been located in the courtyard or in the gardens of an ancient palace, of which the remains of the walls still exist in the vicinity".

Castello degli Schiavi, jewel of the Sicilian rural baroque of the 18th century, owes its name to a legend which sees a skilful doctor from Palermo, Gaetano Palmieri, save the son of the Prince of Palagonia, Gravina-Crujllas, from a very serious illness. These for enormous gratitude made him gift of a plot of his feud situated near the river Fiumefreddo.
The doctor wanted to build a fortified villa to live there for long periods of the year also because that place was very appreciated by his beautiful wife, Rosalia, who was in love, however, with a certain Nello Corvaja of Taormina.
One day, unfortunately, landed of the Turkish pirates, who among various looting came to the castle kidnapping the two owners, but during the escape, arrived almost to the beach were reached by some young armed, headed by Corvaja, who from the top of Taormina had spotted everything.  Legend has it that the pirates were killed or were put on the run and the Palmieri freed.
To thank the Eternal Father, a small church was erected next to the castle, dedicated to the Madonna of the Holy Letter, and the loggia was built in which the two statues of the Turks were placed. They seem to look anxiously towards the sea, as if waiting to be freed by their companions, and it is thanks to these two statues that the castle was nicknamed "of the Slaves".

"The castle is now owned by the Platania family, barons of Santa Lucia. The interiors of the villa are divided in a lower floor connected to the basement, where there seems to be no trace of a millstone, for the preservation of food and wine. In this evocative environment there is a trap door, from which starts an underground passage which probably led to the Red Tower of Fiumefreddo. Source of great inspiration, were these rooms in 1998 for Franco Battiato for the production of the music video Schock in My Town.

Upstairs, eight rooms, filled with valuable objects: paintings of ancient lords, the coat of arms of Gravina in toson d'oro of Spain, the flag with the coat of arms of the Savoy, books of great value, furniture of the last century. The castle has a large courtyard where there is a well, in the center of it, and the small church, formerly dedicated to the cult of St. John, built in 1544 by Ferdinand Gravina-Crujllas, as we can read in the plaque placed at the entrance. Later, in about 1840, the little church was dedicated to the cult of the Madonna della Lettera.

The Castello degli Schiavi is famous all over the world because it has been used several times as a movie set.  In 1968 Pier Paolo Pasolini shot some parts of L'orgia here; it reached world fame thanks to Francis Ford Coppola who preferred it for the setting of the main scenes of The Godfather, both part I (1972) and II (1974), such as the unforgettable explosion of the car after the wedding.

But to these places is tied a memory of mine for the goodbye dinner of an American group arrived in Sicily for one of our tailor-made trips.
We had designed the atmosphere of the courtyard, as usual with all the passion that distinguishes us, behind the tables set up, a corner for the tangerine aperitif, a magnificent scent of magnolia inebriated more than Etna Doc, a grecale that blew lightly on the clothes of guests carefully chosen to represent the last evening of a trip to Sicily.

Castiglione di Sicilia - a village between Etna and the Alcantara river

Castiglione di Sicilia, a town between Etna and Alcantara, a crib between one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, nestled among chestnut forests, hazelnut groves, oak trees, orange groves, rows of vines, almond trees and broom, is the ideal place to spend a vacation between wild and roaring nature, between DOC wine tourism, hiking, churches and rock tombs, a mountain retreat and a country between history and legend.

History and Legend

Before the arrival of the Greeks, Castiglione was inhabited by Siculi, Sicani and Elimi, therefore the origins have been fixed at 403 BC, scarce are the testimonies of the Roman era. In the 535 a.C. with the Greek-Byzantine occupation also in the valley, beyond to the whole Sicily a reawakening of the culture and the economy is had, with a clear testimony of the rustic tempietti said Cube, worthy of note that one of Saint Sunday to Castiglione, that integral one of Malvagna and others to the borders between Castiglione and Randazzo.

The actual Castiglione rises in the Middle Ages among walls, historical districts and villages, but only under Federico II of Svevia it knows the appellative of "Animosa" and the privilege to mint coin. Today the symbols of Castiglione are U Cannizzu, a circular tower recently restored and the Castle, whose main nucleus is attributed to the Norman-Swabian period for the two wonderful mullioned windows of the western part.

The legend of Angelina

The Castle of Castiglione di Sicilia, a stronghold in the Middle Ages, had such an important function that it gave its name to the town: Castello Grande, interpreted as Catello del Leone (Catellus of the Lion), which gave a mark of royalty, inspiring also the coat of arms.

In spite of the state of abandonment, the legend still leaves us with a fervid and vivid image of the beautiful and in love Angelina and her ardent story.

For the love of Angelina and the Dauphin of France was built on a hill, which had seen ignite the fire of love between the two, a castle which gave the name of Francavilla.

After having secretly met Angelina and married her, the Dauphin promised her that he would return in August of the following year to take her to France and make her Queen. The agreed signal of his return would be a fire lit on the hill, near the river Alcantara, which happened as expected.

The name of the castle of Francavilla was chosen because, it is said that, during the nights of waiting for the return of the Dauphin, Angelina did stay the nurse Franca of lookout, saying continuously: "Franca, vigghia; Franca vigghia" ("Vigil Franca, vigil Franca").

Active tourism

The area Castiglione sees the 6 fractions of: Solicchiata, Passopisciaro Verzella, Rovittello, Gravà and Mitogio each dedicated to a noteworthy route even by motorcycle, but we, lovers of eco-sustainability recommend some paths on foot, or on horseback and especially by bicycle, where a project has seen the transformation of some disused railway lines in bike paths, such as, precisely that of Rovittello, with an incredible view of Etna that dominates.

Typical dishes of the village

Macaroni with pork ragout and baked ricotta cheese. Typical dish of the zone are also the fave a maccu, the meat is cooked rigorously to the fire, is it of pig, kid or lamb, obviously accompanied by an optimal Etna DOC, Castiglione is in fact rich of wine houses that produce it.

The sweets of the place, in addition to the typical Sicilian ones, are to be tasted in loco the frittelle of fresh ricotta called sciauni, filled with ricotta, cinnamon and sugar wrapped in a sheet of pasta made by hand with an ancient method and then fried, sprinkled with granulated sugar, the hazelnut and almond pastries, honey and chopped peels of mandarin.

The Alcantara Valley and its River Park

The Alcantara River, 52 km, for most of the border between the province of Catania and Messina, takes its name from the Arabic Al Quantarah or "the bridge".

Numerous are the historical evidences that gave a name to the river: from the Greeks who called it Akesines or Assinos, to Pliny the Elder who named it Asines, from Appiano Alessandrino it was called Onobalas, for Federico III of Aragon instead the river took the name of Flumen Cantaris.

Floresta, Santa Domenica Vittoria, Randazzo, Mojo Alcantara, Castiglione di Sicilia, Roccella Valdemone, Francavilla di Sicilia, Malvagna, Motta Camastra, Graniti, Gaggi, Calatabiano, Taormina and Giardini Naxos, are all municipalities that around this valley deserve more than a simple visit, each one clearly for its own characteristic.

At the end of the fifteenth century Pietro Bembo, in his "De Aetna" described the Alcantara valley as follows: "Descending from the hill of Taormina and moving away little by little from the coast, we entered the valley formed on the left by the slopes of Etna, on the right by the mountains of Taormina, and along it we arrived up to Randazzo ... From Taormina we had covered the distance of twenty-four miles in all. Valley carved and watered by a noisy river from the perennial course.

Going up from the river, the flow of water, slow in some places and swirling in others, it seems almost an alternation of seasons and stages of life, but it is also the focus of lush nature, which gives us a magnificent flora and colorful, naturalistic aspects of enormous charm, including the columnar basalts and the flora and fauna pluvial that give unique colors especially in autumn, when the summer heat is now just a memory, gives way to the season of foliage colors and does not indicate so much the season of the year that heralds the decline, the sunset or the end of the beautiful season but rather the season of the fruits that nature and man's work have prepared for the winter and reap the benefits of their hard work in the fields and dedication to govern nature.

The Gorges are located in the Alcantara Valley, near Francavilla di Sicilia, in the province of Messina, and are protected by the Alcantara River Park Authority. This is a real canyon carved into an ancient lava flow from the slow erosion of water of the river Alcantara, up to 25 meters deep and wide maximum 5 meters.

Eco-sustainability

Inside the park you can enjoy hiking and horseback riding and biking on the bike path in the middle of nature that gives glimpses of the river Etna Alcantara, which do not impact the environment and allow the visitor to empathize with the surrounding environment.

Our nature guides all year round accompany travelers who choose to enjoy one of the nature trails in total serenity, between unspoiled environments, relying on them for the stories, testimonies and valuable information that are not found on the guidebooks, which are the unmissable setting for an experiential tour that between districts, oaks, under the soundtrack of a murmur of turbulent waters, suddenly stands the deep chasm of the Gorge and the characteristic basaltic columns, suggestive and exciting scenery.

Along the 48 km of the river Alcantara, routes between the Nebrodi, Etna and Peloritani, we find characteristic river environments or fiumara, mesoxerofile plant formations and agricultural crops, which led to the birth of the River Park in 2001.

The Wine Road of Etna and the uniqueness of ETNA DOC

In the heart of the Park you will also have the opportunity to take a guided tour of the wine cellars, with evidence of ancient palmenti, tanks dug into the rock of lava stone for the pressing of grapes. Right here is born Etna DOC, obtained from the grapes of four vines: Carricante, Catarratto - white and Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio - red. Thanks to the commitment of small and big entrepreneurs, today Etna wines occupy a prominent place at international level.

The land is as valuable as who works it.  (Marco Aurelio)

Presidio Slow Food: La Manna e l’alta pasticceria

Castelbuono a village between the Madonie and the sea

Castelbuono, nestled in the beautiful Madonie Park overlooking the sea, near the famous Cefalù, is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

The peaks of the Madonie, in northern Sicily, with their two thousand meters, are the highest in Sicily, after Etna. An environmental, botanical and geological treasure, an enchanting landscape.

As you go up, olive groves, orchards and wheat fields give way to forests of beech and oak, oak, elm, cork, chestnut, holly and oak trees that alternate with rocky slopes, while in spring beautiful blooms illuminate the landscape. And it is right among these pictures that Castelbuono is located, with its medieval castle and the splendid seventeenth-century chapel of Sant'Anna.

The manor has a quadrangular plan with 4 angular towers, the plan of the castle is affected by the fact that the current building was implanted on a previous late thirteenth-century castrum of which were found imposing walls and numerous arches in the recent restoration work (2000).

Beating heart of the manor is the Palatine Chapel of Sant'Anna, richly decorated with stuccoes by Giuseppe and Giacomo Serpotta on a pure gold background.

The decoration, commissioned in 1684 by Francesco Rodrigo Ventimiglia to the masters of the art of stucco, presents a riot of playful putti, fluttering drapes and a vocabulary of imaginary creatures fitomorfe and zoomorphic, specimens of a bizarre and mysterious nature.

Behind the grille is kept the reliquary with the Skull of St. Anne, exposed to the people exclusively during the three days of the festival, which begins on July 25 with the opening of the gate and ends with the solemn procession on July 27 and the blessing given to the town from the balcony of the south-west tower of the castle, the home of the Saint.

The palatine chapel is located on the third floor of the Ventimiglia castle in Castelbuono. It was built almost two centuries after the time of transport (1683) of the Holy Relic of St. Anne at the behest of Count John Ventimiglia, who wanted in this chapel all the pomp and grandeur possible. Of course, the faith and devotion of the town was immense and was accentuated by the proclamation of the Holy as the patron saint of the city center. The chapel has a rectangular shape with a particular concentration of pomp near the high altar above which is placed the sacred relic protected by a golden grille.

Slow Food Presidium: The Manna and the high confectionery

The manna, Slow Food Presidium, already known in antiquity - you can read it in a document of 1239 of Frederick II, is the product that is obtained from the solidification of the sap processed that comes out, during the summer season, from the incisions made on the trunk and on the main branches of some species of ash of the genus Fraxinus. Manna can be used as a natural sweetener and as its main component is D-Mannitol, a colorless, odorless and sugary tasting hexavalent alcohol also known as "Manna-Sugar", it seems to be well tolerated by diabetics, therefore, an ingredient in line with the recommendations of the World Health Organization and the trends of modern food science.

Manna is used in many cosmetic recipes because it is emollient and is used in formulations for sensitive skin and anti-aging, according to the Holy Bible, it comes from heaven and is a gift from God, from July to September farmers extract the sap with precise incisions ("ntacche") on the bark of trees. The secreted liquid solidifies rapidly under the action of the sun, giving rise to small white stalactites (the "cannoli") rich in extraordinary properties.

Eco-sustainability: the separate collection with donkeys

All the houses in the historical center of Castelbuono are developed in height and on the ground floor, usually, there is a living room with a large door.

At one time the families kept there the donkey or the mule, then degraded the peasantry civilization was thought in 2007 to return useful the donkeys to make the collection door to door, non-polluting and economical system, making the country of Castelbuono one of the virtuous municipalities and attracting many families with children to admire the collaborators of ecological operators.

Trekking, music and unique paths

From July 17 to 27 is celebrated Sant'Anna, patron saint of the village and in August has become unmissable for lovers of Jazz, the now famous and acclaimed Castelbuono Jazz Festival

For lovers of horseback riding, both Castelbuono and the interior of the Madonie Park, are the green theater where you can relax with horseback riding.

A short distance away for lovers of trekking, a short but intense is the path that leads to the monumental trees, a path where trees stand that are hundreds of years old, many meters in diameter and more than twenty meters high.

We continue along the path that leads to Case Passo Canale and, continuing along the path on the slopes of Monte Ferro, we reach Piano Pomo where, among oaks, beeches and maples, it is possible to admire the Giant Holly trees, unique specimens in the world, more than 15 meters high. Another excursion not to be missed leads instead to the Pollina river and to the suggestive Gole di Tiberio.

The sweetness of Castelbuono

The Turkish Head of Castelbuono is a sweet spoon, similar to the Sicilian blancmange, with strong Arab influences, which is prepared for the Carnival festivities, consisting of thin layers of fried pastry, sweetened by milk cream enhanced by cinnamon and Sicilian lemons, to be accompanied with dry Marsala or prickly pear liqueur.

Dear travelers ... emotions and places of one of the most beautiful villages in Italy are waiting for you!

L’avete appena trovato! Vi aspettiamo!

Etna, a unique land in the world

Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013, is a land of fire, air and water, but also of light that continuously create magnificent colors that explode everywhere.
Anthracite grey streams of recently extinguished lava flows that light up with vermilion pink and fuchsia of the spontaneous romans and green and purple cushions of the soapwort, the soft orange, green and white of the endemic birch trees, the endless carpet of cadmium yellow of Etna's brooms, the copper color of autumn chestnut trees, the dark purple and pearly ochre of bunches of vines, the delicate pink of the cyclamens, the bridal white of the snow in winter that stands out under an intoxicating light, the dark green of the olive trees, the orange and yellow of the citrus fruits that mix together with the green of the leaves of the plain of Catania to reach through a golden expanse of fine sand to dive into the blue of the Ionian Sea.

This is the image of Etna that I like to represent more, because Etna is not only the top of the mountain, but already the piece of land on which you put your foot as soon as you get off the plane ...

"A Muntagna", this is the name that we Catanese give it and it is the first thought as soon as we wake up that makes us admire whether the first image it gives us is accompanied by a plume of smoke or by the Countess of Etna, Altocumulus lenticulaus, the scientifically explained phenomenon when on Etna winds blow from the west and meet the volcano as if it were a deflector, an effective barrier, they rise humidifying themselves, but at high altitude the two opposite winds rotate on themselves "contending", precisely the cloud that derives from it. The lenticular cloud is a fascinating and typical Etnean phenomenon that captures the attention of all the inhabitants of the area of Catania, its shape sometimes of a flattened almond, others of a "hat", it can also be colored by many shades of pink, making the event very impressive.

Etna is also volcanic eruptions that invites us not to forget that we are always an active volcano that between major eruptions and spectacular paroxysms, reminds us of our role as respectful guests.

But not many people know that Etna is also the mountain of Catania where you can go skiing, with its ski lifts to Etna South and Etna North, where the snow generally remains more, but also the walks with snowshoes, have given the territory a + 50% in recent years, meeting a responsible and environmentally sustainable tourism, slowing down the pace of life, but enhancing an aerobic activity in aid of cardio-vascular and respiratory system, toning muscles and especially legs.  But also the lovers of MtB are the protagonists of the odorous Etnean paths, where more generations find moments of aggregation and sharing, linked to activities and discovery of unexplored territories.

The largest active volcano in Europe welcomes every year, pre-pandemic, more than 14 million visitors, driven by curiosity to discover how they live under an active volcano its inhabitants, to test how full of energy is a walk on its lunar territory, suitable for both those who only want to visit the volcano, or lovers of its volcanic caves, its landscapes and endless views, that the tenacious trekkers lovers of mountain hiking, unspoiled landscapes.
Even the greatest enthusiasts find themselves facing unexpected paths from every point of view, because Etna is unique, because Etna is Etna! Everyone agrees that the energy that releases this volcanic soil, fills the soul, body and every limb of the human body, because, as we know, contact with nature gives serenity and silence is reflected in an inner peace acting as an anti-stress!
We organize excursions that will take you up to 3000 meters of altitude giving you breathtaking views!

On the Etnean hills we find historical vineyards with their lava stone terraces of local varieties of vines from which the renowned Etna DOC wines are produced - these wines are the pride of the Etnean area, Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio are wonderful red wines, while Catarratto and Carricante are the white ones.
The extraordinary mineral content of the volcanic soil around Etna is the base for the delicious and typical wines produced here. Vineyards and local wineries offer the traveler the possibility to discover not only its renowned wines but also a cuisine dedicated to every palate, from the most refined and demanding ones to the most typical street food.

Etna's wines are now among the most sought after at international level, thanks to its Terroir, a combination of soil, microclimate, vines and winemaking traditions present in the Etna territory that determines the character, sensory uniqueness and organoleptic quality of its wine.
Let's rediscover together the scent, the touch, the taste that all participate in the taste, finding ourselves all a bit sommelier, but above all lovers of nature and of our volcano.
Our invitation to Etna?  Do you know a place where in the morning you go skiing and at lunchtime you go down to the sea to swim? You have just found it! We are waiting for you!
