La camera segreta

Palermo, capoluogo della Sicilia,  la quinta città più grande d'Italia, Patrimonio Unesco, la città dove  la parola turismo fa rima con la parola cultura , un libro aperto ed accessibile a tutti, di storia e di arte,  le cui pagine racchiudono simultaneamente centinaia di anni di storia e cambiamenti, regala l’opportunità di scovare lo stile architettonico che più si desidera vedere e  senza tralasciare i siti preistorici ci si può dedicare a scovare dall’ Etrusco, al Greco, al Romano, allo stile Bizantino-Arabo-Normanno, Romanico, Gotico-Catalano,  Rinascimentale, Barocco, Roccocò, Neoclassico, Liberty, Ventennio (fascista).

 Palermo, per eccellenza differisce da Catania,  2 realtà sempre in competizione, a mio avviso, per essere la città più normanna della Sicilia, mentre Catania la più araba, anche nell’indole dei suoi cittadini.

Ma, quasi a voler contraddire ciò che ho appena asserito, di recente, tra le sue infinite meraviglie architettoniche, tra realismo e sogno viene scoperto  uno spazio nascosto tra le strade dell’Albergheria, il quartiere  arabo-normanno, nei pressi del mercato di Ballarò e nell'area dell'antico letto del fiume Kemonia,  che ospita  il maestoso Palazzo Normanno, che comprende la Cappella Palatina- con mosaici del XII secolo- la magnifica Chiesa di San Giovanni degli Eremiti con impronta decisamente islamica- uno spazio rimasto sconosciuto fino al 2003, una stanza  che sembra essere un luogo di meditazione, di impatto fortemente emotivo e spirituale, per l’appunto la Camera delle Meraviglie.

Proprio nel 2003, quando i proprietari dell’appartamento, i giornalisti Valeria Giarrusso e Giuseppe Cadili iniziano dei lavori di restauro dell’abitazione.  Dopo qualche anno, a causa di un temporale e di una infiltrazione di acqua si sgretola dell’intonaco e viene alla luce parte della decorazione sottostante con caratteri arabi, e durante i lavori, scoprono scritte in oro e argento. È sorprendente la volta dipinta con disegni di lucerne che potrebbero evocare, ai più piccoli, la favola di “Aladino”.

L’illustre restauratore Franco Fazzio, si accorge che anche le porte della stanza erano dipinte. Per averne certezza scientifica, il radiologo dell’UNESCO, Giuseppe Salerno, effettua una tac su una di tali porte e individua, sotto tre strati di vernice, un disegno ancora più ricco di quello al momento visibile, realizzato seguendo il rilievo delle pennellature originarie.

Un gruppo di ricercatori dell’Istituto di Lingue orientali e asiatiche dell’Università di Bonn, dopo più di un anno di studi e ricerca, finalmente  accertano che le scritte erano difficilmente leggibili perché probabilmente realizzate da un artigiano locale, che non conoscendo la lingua araba, aveva copiato male il testo dato dal committente. Si spiegano i diversi errori, come quello di scrivere da sinistra verso destra. Le scritte più grandi richiamano i tughra, ovvero i sigilli dei sultani ottomani e qui sono utilizzate come invocazioni divine per allontanare le forze maligne dalla stanza. «Quello che Dio vuole accade, quello che Dio non vuole non accade». E’la frase ripetuta quasi come una litania. Ma la bellezza della camera blu, riportata alla luce, con volte affrescate in maniera incantevole, la simbologia numerica legata al Corano: le cinque fiammelle del braciere legate ai 5 momenti di preghiera quotidiane, con una simbologia, così sofisticata, fa pensare ad un committente particolarmente vicino alla cerchia dell’arabista Michele Amari.

L’edificio che contiene la “Camera delle Meraviglie”, in quel periodo, apparteneva ad un personaggio di spicco dell’epoca: Stefano Sammartino, duca di Montalbo, Ministro delle Finanze e Capo della Polizia dei Borbone. Uomo di grande sensibilità e attratto dalla dottrina massonica, potrebbe essere il committente di questa stanza dedicata a riti esoterici. Il numero sette, legato a quella particolare spiritualità, ricorre nella simbologia della “cubola”: le scritte sono disposte su sette righe, sette sono le lucerne su ogni lato della volta e sette sono le aperture dell’ambiente.

Come si può immaginare la camera delle Meraviglie ha suscitato grande interesse da parte dei locali e da chi tra un tour cittadino architettonico, o enogastronomico, non può perdere una chicca simile! Ed un grazie va, quindi ai proprietari, sensibili all’arte, alla cultura che hanno deciso di aprire la loro casa, previo appuntamento, con un piccolo contributo  di 5 euro, è infatti il costo del biglietto della Casa- Museo per contribuire ai necessari e ulteriori lavori di restauro della stanza. Oltre alla camera blu sarà possibile visitare anche gli attigui saloni con i pavimenti in maiolica (passione che ha ispirato la collezione dei proprietari) e le volte originali in stile Liberty, che ricordano le decorazioni di Salvatore Gregorietti nel vicino Palazzo dei Normanni. Un vero e proprio tuffo nel passato all’interno della dimora che ha mantenuto il suo originale impianto ottocentesco. 

 Trovandovi vicino al Mercato Ballarò, diventa imperdibile un tuffo nello street- food palermitano, una grande esaltazione di gusto per le vostre papille gustative tra Arancine, panelle, cazzilli, sfincione, milza, frittola, stigghiole" sono solo alcune delle prelibatezze del cosiddetto cibo da strada che ha fatto sì che Palermo arrivasse prima in Europa e quinta al mondo nella classifica delle dieci capitali mondiali dello street food -pubblicata da Virtual Tourist.com- , la più grande community di viaggiatori del web  il tutto abbinato ad un buon calice di vini della zona che si contendono il primato della bontà.  Ah dimenticavo… in città ci sono degli ottimi cannoli, ma se volete assaggiare quello più buono in assoluto dovrete andare a Piana degli Albanesi!

The secret room

Palermo, the capital of Sicily, the fifth largest city in Italy, UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city where the word tourism rhymes with the word culture, an open book accessible to all, history and art, whose pages simultaneously contain hundreds of years of history and changes, gives you the opportunity to find the architectural style that you want to see and without neglecting the prehistoric sites you can devote to find out from 'Etruscan, Greek, Roman, Byzantine-Arab-Norman style, Romanesque, Gothic-Catalan, Renaissance, Baroque, Rocco, Neoclassical, Liberty, Ventennio (fascist).

Palermo, par excellence differs from Catania, 2 realities always in competition, in my opinion, to be the most Norman city of Sicily, while Catania the most Arab, even in the character of its citizens.

But, as if to contradict what I have just asserted, recently, among its infinite architectural wonders, between realism and dream is discovered a hidden space between the streets of Albergheria, the Arab-Norman district, near the market of Ballarò and in the area of the ancient bed of the river Kemonia,  which houses the majestic Norman Palace that includes the Palatine Chapel - with mosaics of the twelfth century - the magnificent Church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti with decidedly Islamic imprint a space remained unknown until 2003, a room that seems to be a place of meditation, strongly emotional and spiritual impact, precisely the Chamber of Wonders.

Just in 2003, when the owners of the apartment, the journalists Valeria Giarrusso and Giuseppe Cadili began the restoration works of the house.  After a few years, due to a storm and an infiltration of water, the plaster crumbled and part of the underlying decoration with Arabic characters came to light, and during the work, they discovered writings in gold and silver. It is surprising the vault painted with drawings of oil lamps that could evoke, to children, the fable of "Aladdin".

The illustrious restorer Franco Fazzio, realizes that even the doors of the room were painted. To have scientific certainty, the radiologist of UNESCO, Giuseppe Salerno, performs a CT scan on one of these doors and identifies, under three layers of paint, a design even richer than that currently visible, made by following the relief of the original brushwork.

A group of researchers from the Institute of Oriental and Asian Languages at the University of Bonn, after more than a year of study and research, finally ascertained that the inscriptions were difficult to read because they were probably made by a local craftsman who, not knowing Arabic, had copied the text given by the client incorrectly. This explains the various errors, such as writing from left to right. The larger writings are reminiscent of tughras, or the seals of the Ottoman sultans, and are used here as divine invocations to ward off evil forces from the room. "What God wants happens, what God doesn't want doesn't happen." That's the phrase repeated almost like a litany. But the beauty of the blue room, brought to light, with vaults frescoed in an enchanting way, the numerical symbolism linked to the Koran: the five flames of the brazier linked to the 5 moments of daily prayer, with a symbolism, so sophisticated, makes one think of a client particularly close to the circle of the Arabist Michele Amari.

The building that contains the "Chamber of Wonders", at that time, belonged to a leading figure of the time: Stefano Sammartino, Duke of Montalbo, Minister of Finance and Chief of Police of the Bourbons. A man of great sensitivity and attracted by the Masonic doctrine, he could be the client of this room dedicated to esoteric rites. The number seven, linked to that particular spirituality, recurs in the symbology of the "cubola": the writings are arranged on seven lines, seven are the oil lamps on each side of the vault and seven are the openings of the room.

As you can imagine, the Chamber of Wonders has aroused great interest from locals and from those who, between an architectural city tour, or food and wine, can not miss such a gem! And a thank you goes, therefore, to the owners, sensitive to art, culture that have decided to open their home, by appointment, with a small contribution of 5 euros, is in fact the cost of the ticket of the House-Museum to contribute to the necessary and further restoration of the room. In addition to the blue room, it will be possible to visit also the adjoining halls with majolica floors (passion that inspired the collection of the owners) and the original Liberty style vaults, which recall the decorations of Salvatore Gregorietti in the nearby Palazzo dei Normanni. A real dive into the past inside the residence that has maintained its original nineteenth-century layout.

Torre Salsa e la favolosa spiaggia di Bovo Marina

 

Tra Siculiana Marina ed Eraclea Minoa si estende una costa incontaminata, la Riserva Naturale Orientata di Torre Salsa, dove le falesie di gesso si alternano alle marne calcaree a Globigerina, ricoperte talvolta da strati di argilla. Le notizie più antiche che si hanno di questo territorio risalgono al 1500 con la descrizione dell'architetto Camillo Camilliani nel suo viaggio per lo studio del piano per la difesa delle coste Siciliane dalle incursioni Saracene.

La vegetazione erbacea e cespugliosa che ricopre l'ambiente, a volte impervio, talora consente l'accesso alla splendida spiaggia da stretti sentieri tra le rocce. Il mare é limpidissimo, i fondali rigogliosi di flora e ricchi di fauna.

La Torre Salsa, antica torre di avvistamento, si trova nel cuore di questa oasi e domina la sommità di un piccolo promontorio d'argilla da cui traspare, laddove il processo d'erosione é più intenso, la bianca marna calcarea. Sul mare un frastagliato tavolato roccioso crea una miriade di sentieri, dove i pesciolini guizzano veloci tra le alghe ed i lenti crostacei trovano rifugio.  La natura impervia dei luoghi ha preservato dalle lottizzazioni quest'oasi e la proietta, per la varietà e la bellezza dei suoi ambienti, per l'importanza della flora e della fauna, fra le aree più interessanti della Sicilia, meritevoli della massima tutela.

La zona intorno ad esso é soggetta ad esondazione naturale che la rende, specie nei mesi invernali, inaccessibile. Nella stagione estiva il pantano si asciuga e attraverso una trazzera che lo costeggia é possibile raggiungere la spiaggia. La Riserva naturale orientata nasce nel giugno del 2000 ed è sicuramente uno dei percorsi ecosostenibili WWF che cerca di valorizzare e proteggere le bellezze di una terra tutta da scoprire.

Ai nostri clienti, amanti dei percorsi trekking e della natura, includiamo spesso questo percorso che conduce al giardino delle orchidee realizzato sulla proprietà del WWF dove è possibile osservare alcune delle orchidee censite all'interno della riserva e subito dopo alla valle del ginepro, ove è possibile osservare gli ultimi esemplari di ginepro turbinata posizionati alla base di un impluvio ad anfiteatro, costituito da un suggestivo strato di cristalli di gesso. Risalendo la valle è possibile osservare varie panoramiche verso il mare e alcuni "pinnacoli carsici" portati alla luce dall'attività estrattiva. Si percorre un sentiero natura che porta in spiaggia e dove è possibile sostare. Lungo questo sentiero é possibile osservare la graduale variazione vegetazionale della macchia a cespugli sino alla vegetazione dunale.

A poca distanza dalla RNO di Torre Salsa si trovano meravigliose spiagge che durante la bella stagione sembrano esser state disegnate per regale le emozioni più inattese che possiate immaginare, spiagge dai colori caraibici con colori del deserto, soprattutto al tramonto.

Sono spiagge per chi vuol godersi momenti in solitudine, passeggiate all’insegna del relax, una buona lettura, momenti in allegria con un cocktail dai sapori mediterranei e  con i profumi siciliani, una cena direttamente sul mare, se le parole non sono riuscite a darvi la giusta prospettiva, se neanche le immagini riusciranno a catturarvi pienamente, non resta che prenotare una vacanza in Sicilia, nella Sicilia esperienziale e sostenibile che amiamo e scoprire di persona quante emozioni certi luoghi sapranno regalarvi!

Torre Salsa and the fabulous beach of Bovo Marina

Between Siculiana Marina and Eraclea Minoa stretches an uncontaminated coast, the Oriented Natural Reserve of Torre Salsa, where the chalk cliffs alternate with Globigerina calcareous marls, sometimes covered by layers of clay. The oldest news of this territory dates back to 1500 with the description of the architect Camillo Camilliani in his trip to study the plan for the defense of the Sicilian coasts from Saracen raids. 

The herbaceous and bushy vegetation that covers the environment, sometimes impervious, sometimes allows access to the beautiful beach from narrow paths between the rocks. The sea is very clear, the seabed is rich in flora and fauna.

The Salsa Tower, an ancient watchtower, is located in the heart of this oasis and dominates the top of a small promontory of clay from which shines, where the erosion process is more intense, the white limestone marl.

On the sea a jagged rocky plateau creates a myriad of paths, where small fish dart fast among the algae and slow crustaceans find refuge.

 The impervious nature of the places has preserved from the parcelling out this oasis and projects it, for the variety and the beauty of its environments, for the importance of the flora and the fauna, among the most interesting areas of Sicily, deserving of the maximum protection.

The area around it is subject to natural flooding that makes it, especially in winter months, inaccessible. In the summer season the quagmire dries up and through a trazzera that coasts it is possible to reach the beach. 

The Oriented Nature Reserve was founded in June 2000 and is certainly one of the WWF eco-friendly trails that seeks to enhance and protect the beauty of a land to be discovered.

To our customers, lovers of trekking and nature, we often include this path that leads to the orchid garden built on the property of the WWF where you can observe some of the orchids recorded within the reserve and immediately after the juniper valley, where you can see the last specimens of juniper turbinata positioned at the base of an amphitheater impluvium, consisting of a striking layer of chalk crystals. Going up the valley it is possible to observe various panoramic views towards the sea and some "karst pinnacles" brought to light by the mining activity. A nature path leads to the beach where it is possible to stop. Along this path it is possible to observe the gradual variation of vegetation from bush to dune vegetation.  

A short distance from the RNO of Torre Salsa there are wonderful beaches that during the summer seem to have been designed to give the most unexpected emotions that you can imagine, beaches with Caribbean colors with colors of the desert, especially at sunset.

 They are beaches for those who want to enjoy moments of solitude, relaxing walks, a good reading, happy moments with a cocktail of Mediterranean flavors and Sicilian scents, a dinner directly on the sea, if words have not been able to give you the right perspective, if not even the images will be able to capture you fully, you just have to book a vacation in Sicily, in the experiential and sustainable Sicily that we love and discover for yourself how many emotions some places will give you!

Il Parco dei Nebrodi più inatteso

La Cascata Nicoletta, un angolo nascosto del Parco dei Nebrodi,  fa parte della Sicilia inattesa, nascosta e poco nota, un luogo molto suggestivo e meta di escursionisti e di amanti della natura che si trova nel territorio di Caronia.

Una delle nostre valide guide naturalistiche sarà ben lieta di accompagnarvi attraverso una bella camminata ed un trekking fluviale che ripercorre il torrente fino alla Cascata Nicoletta. Un percorso nell’alveo del torrente non particolarmente impegnativo, anche se in alcuni punti è richiesta una   adeguata agilità per attraversare rocce e massi.  Lungo il torrente, infatti, ci sono le rocce del Flysch Numidico, ovvero alternanze di quarzareniti grigie, in grossi banchi, e argille silicee scagliettate che col tempo sono state modellate dall’azione erosiva dell’acqua.

Sarà davvero una esperienza unica, immersi nelle acque limpide e fresche, si farà un po' di trekking fluviale, all’interno del vallone del torrente San Barbaro, affluente del torrente San Fratello, fino ad arrivare alla splendida Cascata Nicoletta, dove la vegetazione della macchia mediterranea, quella tipica delle fiumare del messinese, a regime torrentizio, con diverse sugherete e lecci nelle aree più alte dei versanti,  fa da cornice ad un magnifico paesaggio  con scenari di grande effetto .

“Il piano alto della cascata si compone di un primo salto che riversa le acque del fiume all’interno di una vasca di roccia avente forma ellittica, circondata sul perimetro esterno da una bellissima gradinata circolare di roccia. La struttura ha le dimensioni e l’architettura di un anfiteatro con tanto di lussuosa tribuna. La acque del fiume raccolte all’interno di questa straordinaria piscina traboccando a valle,  danno vita al grande salto della cascata.

Questa porzione del fiume è un gioiello del tesoro più prezioso dei Nebrodi e costituisce la perla di maggiore valore del Nicoletta, un fiume che ha ancora molte cose da raccontarci e tante emozioni da regalarci.”

A questa escursione consigliamo sempre di legare la scoperta della Grotta San Teodoro, con un tuffo nella preistoria;  è fruibile tutti i giorni dell'anno, con orari differenziati a seconda del periodo, nota agli studiosi sin dal 1859, anno in cui Francesco Anca, Barone di Mangalavite, la scoprì ed effettuò i primi scavi. Situata ad una quota di 144 metri s.l.m..

La Grotta di San Teodoro ha una profondità di circa sessanta metri mentre larghezza e altezza sono intorno ai venti metri e al suo interno sono state ritrovate le ossa della donna più antica della Sicilia alla quale è stato attribuito il nome di Thea, dal nome della grotta San Teodoro ma è importante porre attenzione alla notizia che fu abitata dall’uomo primitivo nel periodo che va dal 12.000 al 8.000 a.C. e qui furono ritrovati i resti di sepolture paleolitiche siciliane e ossa di animali preistorici ormai estinti, come l’elefante nano.

 La Grotta, simbolo del paese di Acquedolci,  concorre al riconoscimento di “come bene del Patrimonio Unesco”, di particolare rilevanza architettonica rivestono i ruderi del vecchio castello, all'interno del quale sono ancora ben riconoscibili le cantine, i saloni e le stanze private del barone Larcan.

 Il territorio del Parco dei Nebrodi, area naturale protetta della Sicilia, mostra un altro lato della Sicilia che probabilmente molti non conoscono,  le temperature in inverno possono raggiungere anche i -10 gradi, vista l’altitudine ed i vasti boschi che incidono sul clima, laghetti, cascate e magnifici punti panoramici, dai quali ammirare i maestosi grifoni, che sono stati  nuovamente reintrodotti nel parco, vi aspettano per una nuova scoperta!

The most unexpected Nebrodi Park

The Cascata Nicoletta, a hidden corner of the Nebrodi Park, is part of the unexpected Sicily, hidden and little known, a very suggestive place and destination for hikers and nature lovers that is located in the territory of Caronia. 

One of our valid naturalistic guides will be glad to accompany you through a beautiful walk and a river trekking that follows the torrent up to the Nicoletta Waterfall. A path in the riverbed of the stream is not particularly challenging, although in some places is required an adequate agility to cross rocks and boulders.  Along the river, in fact, there are the rocks of the Flysch Numidico, or alternating gray quartzarenites, in large banks, and flaky siliceous clay that over time have been shaped by the erosive action of water. 

It will be a truly unique experience, immersed in the clear and fresh water, you will do some 'river trekking, within the valley of the stream San Barbaro, a tributary of the stream San Fratello, until you reach the beautiful waterfall Nicoletta, where the vegetation of the Mediterranean, the typical rivers of Messina, a torrential regime, with several cork and holm oaks in the highest zaree of the slopes, is the setting for a magnificent landscape with scenarios of great effect.

"The high floor of the waterfall consists of a first jump that pours the waters of the river inside a rock pool having an elliptical shape, surrounded on the outer perimeter by a beautiful circular staircase of rock. The structure has the dimensions and the architecture of an amphitheater with a luxurious tribune. The waters of the river collected within this extraordinary pool overflowing downstream, give rise to the great leap of the waterfall.

This portion of the river is a jewel of the most precious treasure of the Nebrodi and constitutes the pearl of greater value of the Nicoletta, a river that still has many things to tell us and many emotions to give us".

To this excursion we always advise to tie the discovery of the Cave San Teodoro, with a dive in the prehistory; it is accessible every day of the year, with differentiated timetables according to the period, known to the scholars since 1859, year in which Francesco Anca, Baron of Mangalavite, discovered it and effected the first excavations. Located at an altitude of 144 meters above sea level.

The Cave of San Teodoro has a depth of about sixty meters while width and height are around twenty meters and inside were found the bones of the oldest woman in Sicily which was given the name of Thea, from the name of the cave San Teodoro but it is important to pay attention to the news that was inhabited by primitive man in the period ranging from 12. 000 to 8,000 BC and here were found the remains of Paleolithic Sicilian burials and bones of prehistoric animals now extinct, such as the dwarf elephant.

 The Cave, symbol of the country of Acquedolci, concurs to the recognition of "as a good of the Unesco Patrimony", of particular architectural importance cover the ruins of the old castle, inside which are still well recognizable cellars, halls and private rooms of Baron Larcan.

 The territory of the Nebrodi Park, a protected natural area of Sicily, shows another side of Sicily that probably many do not know, the temperatures in winter can also reach -10 degrees, given the altitude and the vast forests that affect the climate, lakes, waterfalls and magnificent viewpoints, from which to admire the majestic griffon vultures, which have been reintroduced in the park, are waiting for you for a new discovery!

Il Parco dei Nebrodi, pura natura per 4 stagioni

La Dorsale dei Nebrodi è un lungo itinerario escursionistico che da Serra Merio, comune di Mistretta, conduce a Portella Dagara, comune di Floresta.

La Dorsale, passando accanto alle uniche zone umide d'alta quota della Sicilia, interessa gli ambienti alto-montani del parco, attraversando scenari naturali pressoché incontaminati. Lungo il percorso, attrezzato con cartelli indicatori, è possibile fermarsi presso diversi punti di sosta, in coincidenza di aree di rilevante interesse naturalistico e paesaggistico. 

Una traversata di circa 70 km all’interno del Parco dei Nebrodi in prossimità della cresta montuosa dell’area protetta più grande della Sicilia, lungo l’appennino siculo.

Straordinaria la varietà di ambienti, paesaggi, flora, fauna che si potranno osservare durante una gita di trekking: boschi maestosi e fittissimi (faggete di Pizzo Fau, Mangalaviti, Serra del Re), rarità botaniche (bosco della Tassita), zone umide di grande interesse e fascino (Maulazzo, Biviere, Cartolari, Trearie), spettacolari punti panoramici, solo alcuni tra i più belli: Portella Pomiere, Monte Pelato, Portella Biviere, Portella Testa. I centri abitati di riferimento sono Floresta, ad Est, comune più alto della Sicilia (1272 m s.l.m.) e Mistretta, ad Ovest (950 m s.l.m.). L’itinerario si può suddividere in 3 o più tappe apportando anche altre varianti ed una suddivisione diversa delle tappe a seconda della capacità del trekker.

Giunti al lago Biviere la sorpresa è tutta per uno sguardo al panorama e lo stupore che riempie l’anima con una grande sensazione di serenità, dove finalmente inizia il vero confronto tra l’essere umano di fronte a madre natura! Si ammirerà un panorama a 360 gradi, fra Monte Soro, le Rocche del Crasto e L'Etna, consigliatissimo il birdwatching.

 

Il Lago Maulazzo (1400 mt. slm) sito alle pendici nord-orientali di Monte Soro, è un invaso artificiale di circa 5 ettari, realizzato negli anni '80, incastonato nella superba faggeta di Sollazzo Verde, ha acquistato notevole importanza sul piano naturalistico e paesaggistico, ed è lì un altro momento di pura magia… la natura dà spettacolo in tutte e 4 le stagioni con colori differenti, cangianti, pronti a manifestarsi in tutto lo splendore che solo la natura può testimoniare e regalarci.

La produzione locale:  Il paniere dei Nebrodi contiene tanti prodotti tipici e presidi Slow-food, grande soddisfazione siciliana,  quali formaggi e salumi, miele, l'Olio evo Valdemone DOP,  fragole, fragoline di bosco, mirtilli, lamponi, more e ribes bianchi e rossi. Base comune a molti dei dolci tradizionali dei Nebrodi, che presentano una sorprendente varietà, è la pasta di mandorle: la si usa, con aggiunta di cioccolato o di frutta o di fichi secchi, anche nel ripieno della pasta reale "coperta", una sorta di raviolone rotondo. Farciti di fichi, noci, pinoli, scorze di arancia e cannella sono i buccellati. Alla categoria dei piccoli dolci secchi appartengono i rametti o ramette, biscotti di mandorle o nocciole bianchi, ricoperti con granella colorata. Le giammelle o giammellotte sono di pasta più morbida, all'uovo, mentre con la pasta del pane si fanno le ciambelle (cuddura) pasquali.

Cosa manca a questo punto per una visita in quest’area? Solo tu! Che sia trekker, ciclista, o solo amante  della natura, questi sono  i luoghi che ci fa piacere consigliare a chi desidera  scappare dal tran-tran quotidiano e rifugiarsi nella natura del Parco dei Nebrodi, armonia e riconciliazione con il mondo saranno assicurati!

Nebrodi Park, pure nature for 4 seasons

The Dorsale dei Nebrodi is a long excursion itinerary that from Serra Merio, municipality of Mistretta, leads to Portella Dagara, municipality of Floresta. 

The Dorsale, passing next to the only humid zones of high altitude of Sicily, interests the high mountain environments of the park, crossing natural sceneries almost uncontaminated. Along the way, equipped with signs, you can stop at different points of rest, coinciding with areas of significant natural interest and landscape. 

A crossing of about 70 km inside the Nebrodi Park near the mountainous crest of the largest protected area of Sicily, along the Sicilian Apennines.

Extraordinary variety of environments, landscapes, flora, fauna that can be observed during a trekking trip: majestic forests and dense (beech forests of Pizzo Fau, Mangalaviti, Serra del Re), botanical rarities (forest of Tassita), wetlands of great interest and charm (Maulazzo, Biviere, Cartolari, Trearie), spectacular viewpoints, just some of the most beautiful: Portella Pomiere, Monte Pelato, Portella Biviere, Portella Testa. The inhabited centers of reference are Floresta, to the East, the highest town of Sicily (1272 m above sea level) and Mistretta, to the West (950 m above sea level).

The itinerary can be subdivided in 3 or more stages bringing also other variations and a different subdivision of the stages according to the capacity of the trekker.

Once arrived at the lake Biviere the surprise is all for a look at the panorama and the amazement that fills the soul with a great feeling of serenity, where finally begins the real confrontation between the human being in front of mother nature! You can admire a 360 degrees view, between Monte Soro, the Rocche del Crasto and Etna, birdwatching is highly recommended.

Local production: The Nebrodi bread basket contains many typical products and Slow-food presidia, a great Sicilian satisfaction, such as cheeses and cold cuts, honey, Valdemone DOP extra virgin olive oil, strawberries, wild strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and white and red currants. Common base to many of the traditional sweets of Nebrodi, which present a surprising variety, is almond paste: it is used, with the addition of chocolate or fruit or dried figs, also in the filling of "covered" royal pasta, a sort of round ravioli. Stuffed with figs, walnuts, pine nuts, orange peels and cinnamon are buccellati. To the category of small dry sweets belong the rametti or ramette, white almond or hazelnut cookies, covered with colored grains. The giammelle or giammellotte are of softer dough, egg, while with the dough of the bread are made the ciambelle (cuddura) pasquali.
