Il Fiume Alcantara, 52 km, per buona parte limite tra
la provincia di Catania e Messina, vuole il suo nome dall'arabo Al Quantarah ovvero
"il ponte".
Numerose sono le testimonianze storiche che diedero un nome al fiume: dai Greci che lo chiamarono Akesines o Assinos,
a Plinio il Vecchio che lo nominò Asines, da Appiano Alessandrino
fu detto Onobalas, per Federico III D'Aragona invece il fiume prese il nome
di Flumen Cantaris.
Floresta, Santa Domenica Vittoria, Randazzo, Mojo Alcantara, Castiglione di Sicilia, Roccella Valdemone, Francavilla di Sicilia, Malvagna, Motta Camastra, Graniti, Gaggi, Calatabiano, Taormina e Giardini Naxos, sono tutti comuni che attorno a questa valle meritano più di una semplice visita, ognuno chiaramente per una sua caratteristica.
Alla fine del XV secolo Pietro Bembo, nel suo "De Aetna" descriveva così la valle dell'Alcantara: "Scesi dal colle di Taormina e allontanandoci a poco a poco dalla costa, entrammo nella valle formata a sinistra dalle pendici dell'Etna, a destra dai monti di Taormina, e lungo di essa arrivammo fino a Randazzo… Da Taormina avevamo coperto la distanza di ventiquattro miglia in tutto. Valle scavata e irrigata da un rumoroso fiume dal corso perenne".
Risalendo dl fiume, lo scorrere dell’acqua, lento in
alcuni tratti e vorticoso in altri, sembra quasi un alternarsi delle stagioni e
delle fasi della vita, ma è anche il
fulcro della natura rigogliosa, che ci regala una flora magnifica e
variopinta, aspetti naturalistici di enorme fascino, tra cui i basalti colonnari
e la flora e la fauna pluviale che regalano colori unici soprattutto nel
periodo autunnale, quando la calura estiva ormai solo un ricordo, lascia il
passo alla stagione dai colori del foliage
e non indica tanto la stagione dell’anno
che preannuncia il declino, il tramonto o la fine della bella stagione ma bensì
la stagione dei frutti che la natura e il lavoro dell’uomo hanno preparato per
l’inverno e raccolgono i frutti del loro
duro lavoro nei campi e della dedizione a governare la natura.
Le Gole sono situate nella Valle
dell’Alcantara, nei pressi di Francavilla di Sicilia, nella provincia di
Messina, e sono tutelate dall’ Ente Parco Fluviale dell’Alcantara. Si tratta di
un vero e proprio canyon scavato in un’antica colata lavica dalla lenta
erosione dell'acqua del fiume Alcantara; profonde fino a 25 metri e larghe al
massimo 5 metri.
Ecosostenibilità
All’interno del
Parco è possibile praticare trekking e
passeggiate a cavallo e passeggiate in bicicletta anche su pista
ciclabile in mezzo alla natura che regala scorci tra Etna fiume Alcantara , che
non impattano l'ambiente e che permettono al visitatore di entrare in empatia
con l'ambiente circostante.

Lungo i 48 km del fiume Alcantara, percorsi fra i
Nebrodi, l'Etna ed i Peloritani, ritroviamo caratteristici ambienti fluviali o
di fiumara, formazioni vegetali mesoxerofile e colture agrarie, che ne hanno
determinato la nascita del Parco fluviale nel 2001.
La Strada del vino dell’Etna e la unicità dell’ETNA
DOC
Nel cuore del Parco avrai l’opportunità di fare anche
un tour guidato delle cantine vinicole, con testimonianze di antichi palmenti,
vasche scavate nella roccia di pietra lavica per la pigiatura dell'uva. Proprio
quì nasce l'Etna DOC, ottenuto dalle uve di quattro vitigni: il
Carricante, il Catarratto- bianchi ed il
Nerello Mascalese ed il Nerello Cappuccio -rossi. Grazie all’impegno di piccoli
e grandi imprenditori oggi vini etnei occupano un posto di spicco a livello
internazionale.

The Alcantara Valley and its River Park
The Alcantara River, 52 km, for most of the border between the province of Catania and Messina, takes its name from the Arabic Al Quantarah or "the bridge".
Numerous are the historical evidences that gave a name to the river: from the Greeks who called it Akesines or Assinos, to Pliny the Elder who named it Asines, from Appiano Alessandrino it was called Onobalas, for Federico III of Aragon instead the river took the name of Flumen Cantaris.
Floresta, Santa Domenica Vittoria, Randazzo, Mojo Alcantara, Castiglione di Sicilia, Roccella Valdemone, Francavilla di Sicilia, Malvagna, Motta Camastra, Graniti, Gaggi, Calatabiano, Taormina and Giardini Naxos, are all municipalities that around this valley deserve more than a simple visit, each one clearly for its own characteristic.
At the end of the fifteenth century Pietro Bembo, in his "De Aetna" described the Alcantara valley as follows: "Descending from the hill of Taormina and moving away little by little from the coast, we entered the valley formed on the left by the slopes of Etna, on the right by the mountains of Taormina, and along it we arrived up to Randazzo ... From Taormina we had covered the distance of twenty-four miles in all. Valley carved and watered by a noisy river from the perennial course.
Going up from the river, the flow of water, slow in some places and swirling in others, it seems almost an alternation of seasons and stages of life, but it is also the focus of lush nature, which gives us a magnificent flora and colorful, naturalistic aspects of enormous charm, including the columnar basalts and the flora and fauna pluvial that give unique colors especially in autumn, when the summer heat is now just a memory, gives way to the season of foliage colors and does not indicate so much the season of the year that heralds the decline, the sunset or the end of the beautiful season but rather the season of the fruits that nature and man's work have prepared for the winter and reap the benefits of their hard work in the fields and dedication to govern nature.
The Gorges are located in the Alcantara Valley, near Francavilla di Sicilia, in the province of Messina, and are protected by the Alcantara River Park Authority. This is a real canyon carved into an ancient lava flow from the slow erosion of water of the river Alcantara, up to 25 meters deep and wide maximum 5 meters.
Eco-sustainability
Inside the park you can enjoy hiking and horseback riding and biking on the bike path in the middle of nature that gives glimpses of the river Etna Alcantara, which do not impact the environment and allow the visitor to empathize with the surrounding environment.

The Wine Road of Etna and the uniqueness of ETNA DOC
In the heart of the Park you will also have the opportunity to take a guided tour of the wine cellars, with evidence of ancient palmenti, tanks dug into the rock of lava stone for the pressing of grapes. Right here is born Etna DOC, obtained from the grapes of four vines: Carricante, Catarratto - white and Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio - red. Thanks to the commitment of small and big entrepreneurs, today Etna wines occupy a prominent place at international level.
