Castiglione di Sicilia- un borgo tra l’Etna e l’Alcantara

Castiglione di Sicilia, un comune tra l’Etna e l’Alcantara, un presepe tra uno dei borghi più belli d’Italia, incastonato tra boschi di castagni, noccioleti, querce secolari,  aranceti, filari di viti, mandorli e ginestre, è il luogo ideale per poter trascorrere una vacanza tra natura selvaggia e ruggente,  tra enoturismo DOC, escursionismo, chiese e tombe rupestri, un rifugio montano ed un paese tra storia e leggenda.

Storia e leggenda

Prima dell’arrivo dei Greci, Castiglione fu abitata dai Siculi, Sicani ed Elimi, pertanto le origini sono state fissate al 403 a.C., scarse sono le testimonianze di epoca romana. Nel 535 a.C. con l’occupazione Greco-bizantina anche nella vallata, oltre alla Sicilia intera si ha un risveglio della cultura e dell’economia, con una palese testimonianza dei tempietti rustici detti Cube, degno di nota quello di Santa Domenica a Castiglione, quello integro di Malvagna ed altri ai confini tra Castiglione e Randazzo.

L’attuale Castiglione sorge nel Medioevo tra cinte murarie, quartieri storici e borghi, ma solo sotto Federico II di  Svevia conosce l’appellativo di “Animosa” ed il privilegio di battere moneta. Oggi i simboli di Castiglione sono U Cannizzu, un torrione circolare di recente restauro ed il Castello, il cui nucleo principale è attribuito al  periodo normanno-svevo per le due meravigliose bifore della parte ovest.

La leggenda di Angelina

Il Castello di Castiglione di Sicilia, roccaforte nel Medioevo, ebbe una funzione tanto rilevante da dare il nome al paese: Castello grande, interpretato come Catello del Leone, che diede un marchio di regalità, ispirando anche lo stemma. Nonostante lo stato di abbandono, la leggenda ci lascia ancora una fervida e viva immagine della bella ed innamorata Angelina e della sua ardente storia. Per amore di Angelina e  del Delfino di Francia fu fatto edificare sopra una collina, che aveva visto accendere il fuoco dell’amore tra i due, un castello a cui diedero il nome di Francavilla. Dopo aver incontrata segretamente Angelina e sposata, il Delfino le promise che sarebbe ritornato nel mese di agosto dell’anno successivo per portarla in Francia e farla Regina. Il segnale pattuito del suo ritorno sarebbe stato un fuoco acceso sopra la collina, vicino al fiume Alcantara, cosa che avvenne come previsto. Il nome del castello di Francavilla fu scelto perché, si dice che,  durante le notti di attesa del ritorno del Delfino, Angelina fece restare la balia Franca di vedetta, dicendole continuamente:  “Franca, vigghia; Franca vigghia”(“Veglia Franca, veglia Franca”).

Turismo attivo

L’area Castiglione vede le 6 frazioni di: Solicchiata, Passopisciaro Verzella, Rovittello, Gravà e Mitogio dedite ognuna ad un percorso degno di nota anche in motocicletta, ma noi, amanti dell’eco-sostenibilità Vi consigliamo alcuni percorsi a piedi, o a cavallo e soprattutto in bicicletta, dove un progetto ha visto la trasformazione di alcune linee ferrate dismesse in piste ciclabili, quali , appunto quella di Rovittello, con un incredibile panorama sull’Etna che domina.

I piatti tipici del borgo

Maccheroni con ragù di maiale e ricotta al forno. Tipico piatto della zona sono anche le fave a maccu, la carne si cuoce rigorosamente alla brace, sia essa di maiale, capretto o agnello, ovviamente accompagnata da un ottimo Etna DOC,  Castiglione è infatti ricca di case vinicole che lo producono.

I dolci del luogo, oltre a quelli tipici siciliani, sono da assaggiare in loco le frittelle di ricotta fresca chiamate sciauni, ripiene di ricotta, cannella e zucchero avvolte in una sfoglia di pasta fatta a mano con metodo antico e poi fritta, cosparsa di zucchero semolato,  le paste di nocciole e mandorle, miele e bucce di tritate di mandarino.

History and Legend

Before the arrival of the Greeks, Castiglione was inhabited by Siculi, Sicani and Elimi, therefore the origins have been fixed at 403 BC, scarce are the testimonies of the Roman era. In the 535 a.C. with the Greek-Byzantine occupation also in the valley, beyond to the whole Sicily a reawakening of the culture and the economy is had, with a clear testimony of the rustic tempietti said Cube, worthy of note that one of Saint Sunday to Castiglione, that integral one of Malvagna and others to the borders between Castiglione and Randazzo.

The actual Castiglione rises in the Middle Ages among walls, historical districts and villages, but only under Federico II of Svevia it knows the appellative of "Animosa" and the privilege to mint coin. Today the symbols of Castiglione are U Cannizzu, a circular tower recently restored and the Castle, whose main nucleus is attributed to the Norman-Swabian period for the two wonderful mullioned windows of the western part.

The legend of Angelina

The Castle of Castiglione di Sicilia, a stronghold in the Middle Ages, had such an important function that it gave its name to the town: Castello Grande, interpreted as Catello del Leone (Catellus of the Lion), which gave a mark of royalty, inspiring also the coat of arms. 

In spite of the state of abandonment, the legend still leaves us with a fervid and vivid image of the beautiful and in love Angelina and her ardent story.

For the love of Angelina and the Dauphin of France was built on a hill, which had seen ignite the fire of love between the two, a castle which gave the name of Francavilla.

After having secretly met Angelina and married her, the Dauphin promised her that he would return in August of the following year to take her to France and make her Queen. The agreed signal of his return would be a fire lit on the hill, near the river Alcantara, which happened as expected. 

The name of the castle of Francavilla was chosen because, it is said that, during the nights of waiting for the return of the Dauphin, Angelina did stay the nurse Franca of lookout, saying continuously: "Franca, vigghia; Franca vigghia" ("Vigil Franca, vigil Franca").

Active tourism

The area Castiglione sees the 6 fractions of: Solicchiata, Passopisciaro Verzella, Rovittello, Gravà and Mitogio each dedicated to a noteworthy route even by motorcycle, but we, lovers of eco-sustainability recommend some paths on foot, or on horseback and especially by bicycle, where a project has seen the transformation of some disused railway lines in bike paths, such as, precisely that of Rovittello, with an incredible view of Etna that dominates.

Typical dishes of the village

Macaroni with pork ragout and baked ricotta cheese. Typical dish of the zone are also the fave a maccu, the meat is cooked rigorously to the fire, is it of pig, kid or lamb, obviously accompanied by an optimal Etna DOC, Castiglione is in fact rich of wine houses that produce it.

 The sweets of the place, in addition to the typical Sicilian ones, are to be tasted in loco the frittelle of fresh ricotta called sciauni, filled with ricotta, cinnamon and sugar wrapped in a sheet of pasta made by hand with an ancient method and then fried, sprinkled with granulated sugar, the hazelnut and almond pastries, honey and chopped peels of mandarin.
